Friends of the Library announce STEM scouts
October 16, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
The Friends of the Crandon Public Library are excited to announce that a STEM Scouts program will be taking place at the Crandon Public Library beginning this fall and Crandon students in the 3rd to 5th grade are invited to participate in this weekly after school program.
STEM Scouts is a coed pilot program that is designed to focus on the fun and exciting opportunities for youth in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Through weekly meetings and four to six-week modules that cover a variety of disciplines, STEM Scouts offers hand-on learning opportunities designed to be fast-paced, thought provoking, and fun. STEM Scouts will show youth how to apply STEM in their everyday lives and encourage them to develop those experiences into a future career.
Some of the fun activities scheduled this school year include: designing and building a laser light maze, programming and racing robots, making magnetic slime, and much more!
STEM Scouts will be offered each Thursday afternoon from 3:45 – 5:15 p.m. in the lower level of the Library beginning Thursday, October 26th through May of 2018. Students will need their own transportation to and from the library on those days. The city school bus route does drop students off near the library; however, parents are encouraged to make the proper arrangements with the bus driver prior to their student attending the program.
The cost to attend STEM Scouts is a one-time cost of $25 per student. This cost will cover a weekly snack and supplies not covered by the STEM Scout program. The cost to attend STEM Scouts is typically $200.00 per student; however, the Friends of the Crandon Public Library STEM lab has been designated as an outreach lab, giving Crandon students an amazing opportunity to participate in this program.
Registration for Crandon’s STEM Scouts will be held on Monday, October 16th at 5:00 p.m. at the Library. Space is limited to 15 students so registration is necessary.
Volunteers from the Friends of the Library organizations and the staff of Crandon Library will provide the weekly STEM activities. Friends members and/or anyone else interesting in becoming a STEM volunteer is encouraged to contact Amanda Flannery at email@example.com or 715-355-1450 or you may call Michelle at the Library for more information.
