Tracing family roots just became a lot easier since the Crandon Public Library signed up with the world’s largest genealogical library.

The Crandon Public library has been designated a FamilySearch Affiliate, meaning it has access to resources found at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.

Patrons of the Crandon Public Library may now borrow microfilm from the Genealogical Society of Utah. The library has such documents as baptismal and marriage records and immigration records from around the world.

All of it is preserved on 2.4 million rolls of microfilm. Catalogs of records that may be borrowed from the Utah library are available at www.familysearch.org.

Family researchers may browse the above site at home, then visit the library for help ordering records, or they may receive help from the library staff while they browse the website at the library.

In addition to this new service, the Crandon Public Library also has access to several genealogy databases with records from around the world. These databases include Ancestry.com, HeritageQuest and NewspaperArchive.

Microfilm loan charges are $6.00 per reel. The loan time is 60 days which includes shipping time to and from the Family History Library. This assumes 15 days shipping time each way, so the patron will have about 30 days to view the microfilm. There is a $6.00 charge for renewal of the microfilm for an additional 30 days. Microfiche are available for loan at the rate of $1.00 per fiche card. The patron may use the fiche for 60 days.

Microfilm order cards are available at the Front Desk of the Crandon Public Library. Microfilm orders must be paid for in advance. For additional information please contact Michelle @ the library.

According to an article written by Deward Ison in the Crandon Elementary School Newsletter of 1987-1988, the Range Line School begin in 1909 when the Keith and Hiles Lumber Company and Emil Radtke sold land to the Town of Crandon for the development of the Range Line School. Shortly thereafter in the year 1911, the population of the school district was 36 pupils and had a school budget of $1,019.64. The Range Line School continued to educate students until the year 1951 when the school was closed and the students enrolled in the Crandon Elementary School.
